| Epiphany Sunday The word "epiphany" means revelation or insight. It refers to understandings that the Holy Spirit gives to us through everyday occurrences, in a loving and reassuring way and in accordance with gospel principles, so as to enable us to get along with one another in a more humane and Christian manner. The three Wise Men came from the far corners of a pagan world to bring the universal source of salvation back to foreign lands, and the Feast of the Epiphany is meant to celebrate the worldwide relief that Christ brought to the heart of man by suffering on the Cross. The three Wise Men came by one route, and returned by another so as to suggest the manner in which Christ can change our behavior, and enable us to do things God's way rather than continue in the well-worn path of our ego-driven behavior. They were guided by a star to show that God's light can shine on every human heart, and bring peace to a troubled world. The three Wise Men visited the child in the manger to bring this humble transformation to the impoverished masses who were dominated by the power-hungry tyrants of that time. They knew that the birth of Christ had centered the Christ-consciousness in every human heart, and when they returned to their countries of origin, they brought this insight to the far reaches of a pagan world. We can all travel this path by being of that mind that the Babe of Bethlehem brought to the human heart. We can allow our behavior to reflect our belief that the child who was born in the manger can leave his mark on every human heart.
