Solemnity of Mary, The Holy Mother of God

On the eighth of December the church celebrates the feast of Mary, the Mother of God, but on the first day of the New Year the church focuses its solemn devotion on the peerless holiness of the Mother of God. It was on Christmas, and not before, that Mary in fact "gave birth to her firstborn son," [Luke 2:7], and fulfilled her destiny as the Mother of God. The title of Mother of God is the most ancient and venerable designation the church can give, because it is meant to convey her pre-eminence in salvation history. Her renown is based on the merits of her sinlessness, because she brought the fatherhood of God to the bosom of man. We revere Mary, because she is the final common pathway through which the great blessings of unconditional love, joy and peace were able to come into human awareness, and the word of God was able to work in the world so as to make his kingdom come.

According to Saint Augustine, "Mary conceived Christ in her heart through an act of faith before she conceived him physically in her womb." Mary is the pillar of our church, so let us shower our reverence on her, and enjoy the rebirth of Jesus in our hearts. - Father Oscar Martin Picos

Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios

El primer día del año la Iglesia celebra la solemnidad de María Santísima «Madre de Dios». Con motivo la Iglesia nos lleva a celebrar la fiesta de María Madre de Dios en la octava de Navidad. Fue en Navidad, de hecho, en el momento en que «dio a luz a su hijo primogénito» (Lucas 2,7), no antes, que María se convirtió verdadera y plenamente en Madre de Dios .. Madre de Dios es el más antiguo e importante título dogmático de la Virgen. Es el fundamento de toda su grandeza. Por eso María no es, en el cristianismo, sólo objeto de devoción, sino también de teología; o sea, entra en el discurso mismo sobre Dios, porque Dios está directamente implicado en la maternidad divina de María. Es también el título más ecuménico que existe, en cuanto que es compartido y acogido indistintamente, al menos en línea de principio, por todas las confesiones cristianas. «María -dice San Agustín -- concibió a Cristo por fe en su corazón antes de concebirlo físicamente en su cuerpo». No podemos imitar a María en concebir a Cristo en el cuerpo; sin embargo podemos y debemos imitarla en concebirlo en el corazón, o sea, en creer. - Padre Oscar Martin Picos
