A Newman Center is the recognized Catholic Community on campus that serves to build and celebrate Christian community among students, faculty, staff and friends. Whether or not you are a member of the Catholic Church, you are welcome to become involved. There are several hundred Newman Centers across the country, located on college campuses. The Centers are supported by Sunday Collections and voluntary financial contributions. They are named in honor of John Henry Cardinal Newman, an English Priest born in 1801. Cardinal Newman was one of the most famous theologians of his day; through his published writings and private correspondence he created a greater understanding of the Catholic Church and its teachings. His philosophy was: "Universality if the University; to educate the whole persons, mind and heart."

Cardinal Newman, during the second half of the 19th century, began founding Oratories, Centers of Catholic prayer and study on secular campuses in England. By the end of the century Newman's name was becoming attached to Catholic Clubs, and later centers, on campuses across the U.S. Newman once wrote: "I wish the intellect to range with the utmost freedom, and religion to enjoy an equal freedom; but what I am stipulating for is, that they should be found in one and the same place, and exemplified in the same persons... It will not satisfy me, what satisfies so many, to have two independent systems, intellectual and religious, going at once side by side, by a sort of division of labor, and only accidentally brought together. ...I want the intellectual lay man to be religious, and the devout ecclesiastic to be intellectual."

Because we believe that the faithful departed help us with their prayers when we ask, let us call upon Cardinal Newman in the ongoing operation of John Paul II Newman Catholic Center. is personal motto was: "Cor ad colloquist." "Heart speaks heart." If you like, speak from your heart to John Newman because those involved in campus ministry are always close to his heart, and with problems related to life and to the university.
